Pay Attention To GDPR – This Means You

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation. This is the European Union’s new law regarding the privacy and security of personal data for individuals in the EU. So here’s the thing. If it’s even possible that you have acquired an email list or somebody has signed up on your website and they live in the EU, then this law affects you. It’s better to be cautious so you should pay attention to this subject.

GDPR: What is it and when does it go into effect?

GDPR (or, the General Data Protection Regulation) is the European Union’s new privacy law regulating the privacy and security of personal data of individuals in the EU. It goes into effect May 25, 2018.

Just to make sure this is absolutely clear: YES, the GDPR applies to you if you collect, record, organize, store, or perform any operations on data relating to an individual in the EU — even if you are located outside of the EU.

Will GDPR affect your email marketing program?

Yes, but first, some definitions:

The GDPR is looking to add accountability to the practices of data controllers and processors

A controller is the one who “determines the purposes and means of the processing of personal data” (that’s you, and possibly us).

A processor is one who “processes personal data on behalf of the controller” (that’s us when you send Delivra mails)

While there are other options for lawful data collection and processing, for marketers, consent will be the strongest and the most familiar.

What does that mean for your email marketing strategies? While a lot will remain the same, there are some GDPR considerations you’ll want to take.
